About the Event

Regulatory Authority Priority Series - Supporting Children and Young People's Individual Medical Needs

Facilitated by Rarni Rothwell

The Queensland Early Childhood Regulatory Authority (ECRA) is responsible for regulating the early childhood education and care sector including outside school hours care. They have a vital role in making sure children are safe and receive high-quality education and care. This series spotlights the new priority areas they announced in late 2023.

This session will focus on health and hygiene, more specifically supporting all children and young people’s individual medical needs. Under Regulation 90, approved providers must ensure that their services have a policy for dealing with medical conditions in children and young people (for example diabetes, asthma, allergy or anaphylaxis), even if they have no children or young people with a medical condition at the service.

In this session we will consider what an approved provider should do when a child or young person enrolled at their service has a specific health care need or medical condition including:

  • Reviewing policies and procedures
  • Assessing and minimising risk
  • Medical management plans
  • Informing staff members, educators and volunteers
  • Working with the child or young person and their family
  • Following medication, records and authorisation requirements

This session is suited to OSHC professionals at all career stages.
