Outside school hours care has been identified as an occupation at higher risk of exposure to biological hazards. The recent publication of the Model Code of Practice: Managing the risk of biological hazards at work by Safe Work Australia includes examples from early childhood education and care. This reminds approved providers and service leaders that they must treat infection-control cleaning as a safety-critical function with risk managed and documented systems, training and support. For some providers this will be a different way of conseptualising these cleaning tasks.


Biological hazards are substances and agents of biological origin, such as from humans, plants and animals, that pose risks to human health. The model Code of Practice provides practical guidance to assist employers in identifying, and implementing, the most effective ways to manage the risks arising from biological hazards in their workplace…
