Regulatory Authority Priority Series: Positive Relationships with Children

When the Little Things Are Tricky - Exploring Executive Functioning & the Reasonable Adjustments We Can Make

Facilitated by Emily McKenna

The Queensland Early Childhood Regulatory Authority (ECRA) is responsible for regulating the early childhood education and care sector including outside school hours care. They have a vital role in making sure children are safe and receive high-quality education and care. This series spotlights the priority areas they will be focusing on through to 2025.

This session will focus on Positive relationships with children and young people, more specifically creating a secure and nurturing base for children to experience acceptance, consistency and encouragement. This is easier said than done when the “magic ratio” finds itself in reverse, as is too often the case for neurodivergent children and young people. For these kiddos, the little things others can do really easily,  are much trickier. This can take a toll on their social relationships, self-esteem and wellbeing.

Educators need to understand how executive functioning challenges present in OSHC and what reasonable adjustments they need to make. In this session we will:

• Unpack Executive Functioning and it’s Application in the OSHC Setting

• Consider Reasonable Adjustments

• Create Plans for Collaborative Problem Solving with Children & Young People

Educators need to support these children and young people living with invisible disabilities and ensure positive, nurturing relationships in OSHC that allow them to thrive.

This session is suited to OSHC professionals at all career stages.
