The beliefs we hold about children's behaviour shape everything—how we respond in the moment, the interventions we choose, and ultimately, the wellbeing of the children in our care. As Dr. Ross Greene reminds us, "Your explanation guides your intervention."


Yet societal attitudes toward children, their motivations, their struggles, and what we label as "challenging" behaviour, often go unexamined in our day-to-day practice. These underlying beliefs influence whether we see behaviour as defiance or communication, whether we punish or problem-solve, and whose needs take priority in our services.


Best practice in behaviour guidance has evolved dramatically. The removal of behaviourist theorists from My Time, Our Place V2.0 signals a fundamental shift in how we understand and respond to children's behaviour. But have our beliefs and team culture caught up with the framework?
