Reframing Behaviour - Children Do Well When They Can   - Webinar Wednesday

Facilitated by Emily McKenna

Before  we can respond to children’s behaviour, we first need to make sense of it;   after all our explanations guides our interventions. But this can be problematic. Have you ever found yourself making assumptions about a child’s behaviour?   - “they’re doing that on purpose”, “they just want attention”, “they could do this yesterday, why are they being defiant today?” When adults hold these   beliefs, they often respond in ways they think will get children to “want to do well”. And yet, the research is clear that these punishments and rewards don’t actually change behaviour.

But what   if we shifted our perspective? What if we took the view of Dr Ross Greene that  “Children do well when they can?” During this session we will look at:

  • The evidence base around children’s behaviour
  • Understanding the real “why” behind challenging behaviour
  • The role of Educators in supporting children to achieve success

“See a child differently, you see a different child” - Dr Stuart Shanker.

With this shift in perspective, we can find stressors and reduce them, identify unmet needs and meet them, detect still developing skills and teach them. It’s amazing how this new explanation of behaviour can lead to collaborative problem solving and better outcomes for everyone – you included!

Term 3 sees some exciting changes to our Wednesday Webinars. In response to the changing needs of the OSHC sector we have made the following modifications:

  • 30 minute sessions - shorter, sharper content to overcome the time constraints many services are experiencing that limits their engagement with professional development
  • New supplementary resources for every session including:
    • Training  Plan for Educational Leaders with session objectives, regulatory context, pre reading or viewing options, learning activities and additional resources links. This is designed to scaffold Educational Leaders with supporting their educator team in their on the job training, ongoing learning and professional development. It draws connections between session content and pedagogy and practice, and provokes critical reflection on the important role of educational leadership.
    • Educator Worksheet with reflections and activities for ‘Putting into Practice’ the session content
    • This means that even through the sessions are shorter – you’re not missing out on the important bits
    • Cost savings - enjoy educator team (per service) participation for the same fee
  • New delivery time - 10:00am to 10:30am EST
