Introduction to Anti-Bias Practice in OSHC - Webinar Wednesday
Facilitated byLainey Walker
The Approved Learning Framework for School Age Care recognises diverse ways of being, belonging and becoming, and champions the principle of equity, inclusion and high expectations for children and young people in all their diversity. Whilst many of us consciously strive for equity, implicit and structural biases often persist unchecked.
In this session we will introduce:
- How implicit/unconscious and explicit biases impact practice in OSHC
- Using critical reflection to recognise bias at individual and service levels
- The Anti-Bias Practice approach in Education and Care
- Common examples of bias within OSHC that need to be better addressed
Regardless of intent, implicit bias reinforces stereotypes and prejudice, impacting stakeholders’ sense of identity and belonging within Outside School Hours Care. From seemingly harmless references to the “skin colour” crayons, to well-intentioned praise: “he was so brave after he skinned his knee! He didn’t even cry!”; it’s not a matter of whether we have bias, but rather how we confront our biases to ensure equity for all. Join us as we explore Anti-Bias Practice in OSHC and critically reflect upon how implicit bias manifests within our practice and services.
This session is suited to OSHC professionals at all career stages.
Term 3 sees some exciting changes to our Wednesday Webinars. In response to the changing needs of the OSHC sector we have made the following modifications:
- 30 minute sessions - shorter, sharper content to overcome the time constraints many services are experiencing that limits their engagement with professional development
- New supplementary resources for every session including:
- Training Plan for Educational Leaders with session objectives, regulatory context, pre reading or viewing options, learning activities and additional resources links. This is designed to scaffold Educational Leaders with supporting their educator team in their on the job training, ongoing learning and professional development. It draws connections between session content and pedagogy and practice, and provokes critical reflection on the important role of educational leadership.
- Educator Worksheet with reflections and activities for ‘Putting into Practice’ the session content
- This means that even through the sessions are shorter – you’re not missing out on the important bits
- Cost savings - enjoy educator team (per service) participation for the same fee
- New delivery time - 10:00am to 10:30am EST
