Regulatory Authority Priority Series: Positive Relationships with Children

Using the Planning Cycle to Support Children's Behaviour

Facilitated by Emily McKenna

The Queensland Early Childhood Regulatory Authority (ECRA) is responsible for regulating the early childhood education and care sector including outside school hours care. They have a vital role in making sure children are safe   and receive high-quality education and care. This series spotlights the   priority areas they will be focusing on through to 2025.

This session will focus on Positive relationships with children and young people, more specifically how educators can be more intentional.

The inclusion of a planning cycle into MTOP (2.0) acts to scaffold OSHC educators in the important curriculum work and decision making that’s required of them. Often this cycle is used in relation to observing, understanding and planning for “activities”. This cycle can and should be used for every aspect of decision making that takes place in OSHC, all of which have implications for children’s wellbeing, learning and development.

In considering how to guide children’s behaviour and support their participation in the program, the planning cycle can be used as a framework to make sense of behaviour, collaborate with children and families to problem solve what the behaviour is communicating and critically reflect on the equity of participation and outcomes for each child.

This session will uncover how to use the five phases to support children’s behaviour:

  • OBSERVE / Listen / Collect information
  • ASSESS / Analyse / Interpret learning
  • PLAN / Design
  • IMPLEMENT / Enact
  • EVALUATE / Critically reflect

This session will also link participants to helpful templates and resources that can be used at various stages of the planning cycle.

This session is suited to OSHC professionals at all career stages.
